Proceedings, 10 World Congress of Genetics Applied to Livestock Production Using Genomics to Improve Reproduction Traits in Sheep

چکیده
Reproduction traits are important but difficult to improve in sheep because they are lowly heritable and are recorded later in life. Genomic information can be used for genomic prediction of breeding values to increase the accuracy of selection. Alternatively, genomic information can be used to identify recessive lethal mutations, which cause embryonic losses. We investigated both uses of genomic information using 54k SNP in the Border Leicester, Merino and Polled Dorset breeds. Genomic prediction accuracy of three reproduction traits was greater when compared to pedigree methods, especially in less related animals. Furthermore, making use of both sire and ewe information in the reference set increased accuracies. Ten haplotypes carrying potential recessive lethal mutations were identified. One haplotype spanning 50 SNP alleles was significantly associated with litter size. The findings suggest genomic tools should be used to increase reproductive efficiency in sheep.

The DMU-package for Analyzing Multivariate Mixed Models has been developed over a period of more than 25 years. This paper gives an overview of new features and the recent developments around the DMU-package, including: Genomic prediction (SNPBLUP, G-BLUP and “One-Step”), Genome-wide association studies, Survival models and double hierarchical generalized linear mixed models.

Semen production is an important parameter to A.I. studs in the pig industry. This parameter can only be evaluated once the boar has entered quarantine and semen has been collected. Therefore, a protocol to score the testes size of the boars subjectively was developed. We evaluated these subjective scores of testes size as a predictor of semen production and its correlations to female reproduct...
متن کاملAssociation of IGF-I Gene Polymorphisms with Carcass Traits in Iranian Mehraban Sheep Using SSCP Analysis
Molecular genetics selection on individual genes is a promising method to genetically improve economically important traits in livestock. The insulin like growth factor-I (IGF-I) gene may play important roles in growth of multiple tissues, including muscle cells, cartilage and bone. The objectives of the present study were the estimate the haplotype frequencies of the IGF-I gene polymorphisms i...
متن کاملCongress of Genetics Applied to Livestock Production Genetic Improvement of Sheep in Ireland
SheepIreland was created in 2008 with a mission of implementing a dynamic genetic improvement program for sheep in the Republic of Ireland. The foundations of SheepIreland comprise of: a central database, ram producer pedigree flocks, four central progeny testing flocks, and 15 maternal lamb producer commercial flocks. The selection objective has both a terminal and a replacement aspect. Geneti...

The objective of this study was to assess the quality of genomic predictions for rebreeding success or failure after calving, age at first calving, and early pregnancy occurrence in Nellore females. There were 1,853 individuals that had 305,348 SNPs each used in genomic selection analyses. Three genomic prediction methods were used: GBLUP, a Bayesian method (BAYESCπ), and a lasso method (IBLASS...
